16km Of British-Made Steel Delivered For North-East Metro Revamp
February has seen a boon for British-made steel, with 16km of rail delivered as part of a £350 million modernisation programme on the Tyne and wear Metro system.
The rails used were manufactured at British Steel’s Scunthorpe steelworks and then sent to contractor TXM Rail for fabrication and installation. It’s hoped that the move will see the system’s ageing tracks replaced to ensure that passengers can enjoy a more reliable and smoother service moving forward.
An order for 900 tonnes of rail has also been put in, used to upgrade the lines between Newcastle’s Chillingham Road and St James’s stations. Some 936 tonnes have already been used to renew the tracks between Tynemouth and Northumberland Park stations.
Managing director for rail with British Steel Peter Smith said: “Helping the UK and other countries develop and maintain rapid transit systems is a key objective of British Steel. This latest supply showcases new products which will increase rail life in service, giving significant capacity gains to the Metro system. We are looking forward to working with Nexus and their supply chain partners to develop the system further in the future.”
British Steel has also just announced plans to share the company’s expertise at a rail conference in India this year, taking place in New Delhi between February 21st and 22nd. The aim of the conference is to explore challenges, opportunities and trends in the sector, with British Steel planning to discuss its range of products in order to address the specific needs of the metros and railways in India to prevent certain types of degradation.
