Britain Steeled For Coldest December In 7 Years

The elements will be testing the mettle of Britain’s roof insulation next month, as the UK is set for the coldest December in seven years.

The Daily Mirror reported that The Weather Company predicts December 2017 to be colder than usual and ‘notably colder’ than in recent years.

One of the biggest concerns is the risk the cold weather poses to people’s health. There are some 25,000 winter-related deaths recorded each year, however, 34,000 people died of winter-related causes in 2016 even though it was a relatively mild season.

This year, it is feared there may be as many as 40,000 winter-related deaths in Britain.

Moreover, the country risks a repeat of some of the cold weather chaos experienced in 2010 with snow and ice causing havoc on the roads and for train and air services.

Senior meteorologist Mark Stephens-Row was quoted by the paper as saying: “The UK’s first colder-than-average December since December 2010 is expected. This December looks notably colder than recent Decembers. People should be prepared and not allow early winter complacency to set in after mild Decembers in recent years.”

Recently, technical director at Russell Roof Tiles Mark Parsons told Planning and Building Control Today that British roofing is unique, in that the changeability of our weather puts a great deal of pressure on roofing materials.

The expert said as the government builds more homes, guarantees are essential to provide reassurance to the market that a roof will be able to withstand the coldest winters, highest gales and the driest summers.
