New Leeds City Centre Build-To-Rent Scheme Gets Planning Permission

Leeds has seen a number of major new city centre residential projects being developed in the past few years and the situation shows no sign of changing as another scheme has just been given the green light.

The latest project to be granted planning permission is Glenbrook’s £135 million Whitehall Riverside project, which will provide around 500 new apartments and 4,500 sq ft of commercial space. It will consist of two towers of 16 and 19 stories respectively.

It is part of a planned larger £280 million redevelopment of the site to the west of Leeds Station by car park and property developer Town Centre Securities and Danny Roberts, the senior development manager at Glenbrook, predicted: “This decision to grant planning consent for the residential element of Whitehall Riverside will unlock the delivery of the wider masterplan.”

The development of riverside areas in the city like this may increase demand for concrete reinforcement services in Leeds, to ensure the foundations and the banks are secure against erosion, flooding and climate change.

Mr Rpberts commented: “The design has been carefully considered to create a resilient scheme which is embedded in its surroundings and will encourage an active community.” He added that the work should be completed in 2025.

While the site sits on the north bank of the River Aire, the bulk of development in the coming years will take place on the ‘South Bank’, with the rebranded former industrial area of Holbeck being transformed with a series of commercial and residential developments.

Among the upcoming development there is a series of eco-friendly homes, which are to be built by developer Citu.

Known as the Climate Innovation District, the project is being partly funded with help of a £26 million loan from Octopus Real Estate. This will fund the construction of 247 of the eventual total of over 900 homes at the site.
