Leeds United To Get New Training Ground?
Leeds City Council is set to discuss proposals for the construction of a new training ground for Leeds United, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported.
The council’s board is due to meet on 18 October to consider the recommendations made in a report that it engages with the club to discuss the possibility of constructing a training complex and community sports village on two sites near Elland Road.
According to the newspaper, a site has been singled out as a potential location for a hub for the football club’s first team and academy players – the location of the former Matthew Murray High School, which closed over ten years ago.
Other land at Fullerton Park has been suggested for the community sports village. Both sites are owned by the council.
A statement issued by council officials said that, should an agreement be reached and planning consent granted, it would recommend the land being provided to the club on a 99 year lease.
Angus Kinnear, Leeds’ managing director, said that the club has an “ambitious vision” for Elland Road and are keen to turn it into a hub for “elite development” as well as delivering a “thriving community sports hub”.
If the council decides to discuss the proposals from Leeds United further, it could lead to some significant construction work in the city.
There are already some big construction projects underway in the city, with the redevelopment of Bridge Street beginning last month, which will bring a new Hilton hotel to Leeds, along with a range of new homes.
