Leeds City Council Plans Huge Regeneration Programme
One of the largest regeneration programmes of its kind in Europe is proposed for the Hunslet Riverside in Leeds.
Leeds City Council will meet later this month to discuss the plans, which involve doubling the size of Leeds city centre by regenerating this part of the South Bank.
One of the key considerations will be the historic buildings located in this area – namely the Hunslet and Victoria mills. Public consultations have shown that many locals want these buildings to be brought back into use.
As a result, the council has been holding discussions with current owners Historic England about refurbishing the grade II listed mills.
Greater transport connections and pedestrian and cycle links are also part of the planned work, with a new pedestrian and cycle bridge proposed to help people get from the South Bank to areas such as Cross Green and Richmond Hill.
Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning Councillor Richard Lewis explained that they want communities to feel the benefit of the scheme.
“We want it to be part of our city rather than an island unconnected with the communities around it,” he explained.
This isn’t the only major construction project being planned by Leeds City Council at present. Bdaily recently reported that the council had acquired three industrial units at the Logic Leeds site.
Construction of these units, which total 100,000 sq ft, is set to begin over the summer and will be completed by spring 2018. The council will rent out the space once it’s finished.
