Leeds To Get New Council House Development
A development of new council houses in Leeds has been given the go ahead this month, with planning approval granted for 22 new two-bedroom semi-detached houses.
The new homes will be constructed on the site of the former Whinmoor pub in Swarcliffe, which was demolished in 2014 after becoming derelict. The site was then suggested for brownfield development, with Kier Construction Limited working with the council to design suitable plans.
The construction firm is also working on two further connected schemes, all of which are designed to help Leeds deliver new council houses as set out in the city council’s housing growth programme. This aims to deliver 1,000 new council houses over the coming years.
Kier Construction is also going to be constructing new homes at Garnet Grove in Beeston and on Broadlea Street in Bramley.
Work on the Swarcliffe site is expected to begin later this year, with the development scheduled for completion in 2018.
Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, commented: “This scheme is ideal as a brownfield site being transformed from a former derelict eyesore into attractive new affordable housing.”
Operations director at Kier Construction Jon Rukin added that the company will be focusing on space and sustainability with the design and construction of these new homes.
Last month, AECOM stressed that housing development in the north of England needs to be prioritised equally alongside the infrastructure improvements that have already been announced.
