Development Site Made Available In Leeds

Central Leeds has been a very busy place for the construction sector in recent years, with a plethora of major new developments rising up and many more either under construction or in the pipeline.

As well as the historic city centre, much of the focus has been just across the River Aire on the South Bank, the new title for the historic area of Holbeck, which has endured years of decline after the old textile industries that dominated fell away. Insulated roofing sheet providers have had plenty of work in this building boom and there is much more to come.

The latest new development opportunity has arisen after Leeds City Council announced it was making available a 0.44 acre plot at Meadow Lane, close to the Crown Point Brewery and a short walk from the city’s main railway station just across the river.

Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr James Lewis, said: "The city is going through momentous change and the council is committed to continuing to help unlock major commercial and residential development across the South Bank and the centre of Leeds.” He described the plot as a “prime piece of city centre land”.

According to Leeds Live, the likely use of the plot is as a new affordable housing development to help ensure a broad mix of new kinds of residences in the South Bank area. This is in contrast with many other central Leeds developments, which have focused on commercial properties like offices, apartments for professionals, or student flats.

An example of the latter will be the Briggate site that once housed the first ever Woolworths Store. As the Yorkshire Evening Post reported last week, demolition work is now underway on the old store, which will be replaced by a ten-storey student accommodation block with 369 residential units.

The new building will also feature shops on the ground floor and at basement level.
