Funding To Repair Historic Church Roof Near Gainsborough
With thanks to the Culture Recovery Fund (CRF), a historic church near Gainsborough is to receive over £100,000 for villa repairs to its roof.
According to the Gainsborough Standard, the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) is one of the 445 heritage organisations to receive a share of the £1.57 billion CRF to help them during the coronavirus crisis, and the Church of St Martin of Tours in Saundby will receive £119,600.
The church has an impressive pinnacled tower and is home to stained glass windows that were created by renowned Victorian designer Charles Kemp. St Martin’s has been part of Saundby for over 500 years.
The current slate roof has reached the end of its usability and the underlying board and battens have become rotten to the extent that temporary patching has become impossible, causing a risk of falling slates and water ingress.
The funding will allow the church too be re-roofed and undertake high-level masonry so that the historic church can remain open for future generations.
Peter Aiers, chief executive of CCT, said he was extremely grateful for Historic England and the Government for supplying the funding, which will allow the repairs and conservation of 18 in-need churches.
"The Churches Conservation Trust, like many charities, has suffered financially because of the Coronavirus pandemic and we face a significant fundraising gap due to having had to close churches,” he said.
"This award will help us to continue saving these beautiful historic buildings, to keep them open for the public as well as supporting vital craft skills in the heritage sector.”
