Winter can be somewhat problematic for roofs of all shapes and sizes, but there are particular challenges associated with metal roofing sheets due to the materials involved, which can affect their typically significant lifespans.
Choosing the right galvanised roofing materials, ideally using a box profile or similar corrugated design, can make all the difference in ensuring that the wind, snow and rain will not cause any issues, but how you take care of your roofing over the coldest months of the year makes all the difference.
With that in mind, here are some common mistakes made when attempting to take care of a roof over winter that end up doing more harm than good.
Letting Snow, Leaves And Debris Lie
For the most part, snow, leaves, and branches will typically roll off a pitched roof, but it is important to regularly check and clear the roof and gutters in order to not only avoid drainage issues but also the potential risks of rust being caused by the snow and added moisture.
A brush or a leaf blower will typically be more than enough to clear the gutters, but make sure that the gutters and downspouts are working to ensure that water does not pool and potentially corrode.
Do Not Use Salt Or Harsh Cleaners
If there is a lot of snow on the roof, the temptation is to scatter salt on it to melt the stubborn snow and allow it to roll off the roof naturally. This tends to cause more problems than it solves, as the resulting salty water is perfect for causing rust and corrosion.
As well as this, whilst you should not need to do a lot of cleaning, opt for soft brushes and gentle cleaners designed with metal in mind to avoid damaging the galvanised finish and shortening its lifespan considerably.
