Parts of the UK have been subject to amber weather warnings from the Met Office for strong winds as we start 2026, with Storm Goretti not only bringing strong winds but also snow to some parts of the country.
South Wales and the Midlands are expected to be hit by the greatest amount of snowfall, while the south west counties of Cornwall and Devon, as well as the Isles of Scilly and Channel Islands bore the brunt of the strong winds.
Still, those living in Yorkshire can still expect snow and ice as we move further into January, all of which could lead to property damage.
What damage can winter storms cause to roofs?
The issues that winter weather can cause for our roofs ranges from broken tiles that let water into your property through to entire roofs being ripped off by strong winds or collapsing under the weight of heavy snow.
Outbuildings that feature corrugated roof panels, for instance, can be easily damaged in strong winds, especially if the panels used were not cut to fit the building carefully.
Even if your property escapes any serious damage this winter, you may want to explore replacing old corrugated roofs with box profile roofing sheets that are cut perfectly to size. This not only ensures they fit your building properly but also provide long-lasting protection from the elements.
Another challenge in cold weather is the formation of ice dams. This is where snow and ice that’s collected on your roof melts, only to pool near the eaves or gable end of your home, where it then freezes again.
Pools such as this often form if gutters are blocked or damaged, thereby preventing the melted snow and ice from having anywhere to go. Ice dams can lead to moisture seeping into a property and can cause damage to roof tiles too.
